My American Chinchilla Rabbits

Red Saber: "I really like American Chinchilla Rabbits because they are very sweet, cute, and nice; and they are fun to hold."

Some specific things about this rabbit breed that make them very special are:

​The hairs are "agouti" (multi-colored--slate blue next to the skin; then light pearly gray/white; then a band of black; and finally white at the very tip.) The overall appearance is a blue/gray; lightening on the sides and white on the underside and belly. 

​They have a soft, short, rollback coat, which is low-maintenance.  When stroked from back to front, "rollback" fur rolls back into place. 

American Chinchillas are known to be very gentle and docile, and can make good house rabbits, They are a good choice for first time rabbit owners, and do well with children. 

They are the medium size of the Chinchilla Rabbit breeds, reaching 9-12 pounds at maturity.

To develop this breed, American breeders started with the original Chinchilla rabbit breed from France, and selected for larger size to make them more appealing for the fur and meat market. 

The American Chinchilla breed has no particular hereditary diseases or health issues related to their fur, as some breeds do. 

This breed is listed as "Critically Endangered" by the ALBC (American Livestock Breeds Conservancy.)  This is due to the "dying off" of the rabbit fur industry in the late 1940's and the fact that most commercial rabbit meat producers prefer white rabbits. 

​American Chinchillas can be a great choice for homesteaders wishing to raise rabbits for meat or fur; but they are also a great choice for pets.
